Pepper Gas
This stuff can be extremely effective or it can be merely irritating enough to make someone angry--or angrier. Especially if an attacker is using narcotics, the strongest spray available will be necessary to bring them down.
Unlike CN or CS gas, which are irritants, pepper spray is an inflammatory agent. It inflames mucous membranes, swelling the nose, throat, lungs, and restricting all but life support breathing.
Attackers will hit the ground in record time!
Pepper spray causes instant dilation of the capillaries of the eyes, swelling them shut and causing temporary blindness. It also induces choking, coughing and nausea.
These effects are emporary, usually lasting around thirty minutes, making pepper spray preferable to CN or CS gas which can cause damage.
Things to look for:
** The most important thing to look for in pepper spray is the % of CRC's (the active ingredient in hot peppers that gives them their fiery nature). The CRC's in the capsaicin are measured to determine the OC's(Oleoresin Capsicum) potentcy. The EPA's approved level of CRC for Bear deterrent is between 1% and 2% CRC.
Disadvantages:
Not recommended for use in confined places as it will disable user as well. It can also be re-directed in windy conditions, but this depends on grain size. Even if you get a little blow-back, it can mean the difference in life and death.
Stun Guns
The real power of a stun gun is in its pulse frequency rate, not voltage. Pulse frequency rate disturbs the neurological pathways and messages from brain to muscles. The attacker will go down.
Anything of at least 80,000 volts from a reputable manufacturer will have a high enough frequency pulse rate to do the job. You don't need a stun gun of 400,000 volts that costs many times more.
The only disadvantage of a stun gun is that it must be used at close range (unless you choose a taser). However, there are times when you may be forced into close range with an attacker: elevators, stairwells, your car. In these cases, a stun gun is preferable to pepper spray because the spray can affect you in confined areas.
I recommend carrying both pepper spray and a stun gun, or at least keeping a stun gun or taser in your car.
